Purple and Red

21 Aug

It seems that here in the Seattle area, purple has been a popular color for weddings this year.  When I go to the wholesale market to pick up my orders and discuss with other florists what they are doing, they too are doing a lot of purple weddings.  If a bride wants to match her dress to the flowers, this can be a challenge and I might encourage her to highlight the dress with the flowers, instead of trying to match them exactly.  In the pictures below, the bridesmaids were wearing black dresses, so using shades of plum and burgundy worked well.  Dahlias in shades of burgundy and fuchsia, scabosia, “Blue Curiosa” roses, “Amnesia” roses, alstroemeria, kermit poms, and purple and red carnations tied it all together with the brides red and purple color scheme.

For the brides bouquet she opted for red and white.  We found the lovely “Ivanhoe” garden rose – the deep red rose with green center.  My other favorite rose to use is the “Hearts” rose which has a large petal count and if you look closely the center of the rose has the shape of a heart.   Red Mokara orchids, burgundy dahlias, red spray roses, fern curl, white hydrangea and white polo roses completed the bouquet.

The bride also used a collection of vintage glass her grandmother started for her as vases for some of the centerpieces.    The collection consisted of glasses, cups, pedestal bowls, and dessert bowls and were placed in clusters of three and filled with the variety of flowers used in the bouquets.
